Despite being very popular, there are still many difficulties in conceptualizing Big Data. To help you understand, you need to know its 5 Vs:
Volume
Refers to the amount of data generated per second. We are not talking about Terabytes, but rather Zettabytes or Brontobytes. It is estimated that the volume produced doubles every 18 months. It is impossible to store and analyze this amount of data using traditional database technology.
Variety
Refers to the variety of sources from which this immense amount of data arises. They are structured (minority) and unstructured (majority), such as emails, social media, electronic documents, presentations, instant messages, video, etc.
Veracity
Refers to the importance of filtering. Amidst the enormous volume and variety of information, it is necessary to highlight what is rich in content that is important for the company.
Velocity
Refers to the speed at which data is generated and moved. It is often necessary to act practically in real time on the large volume of information generated per second: Big Data allows this analysis without necessarily storing it in a database.
Value
The last V is what makes everything relevant: It refers to the fact that there is no point in having access to Big Data if it cannot be analyzed and applied to the company's decision-making process, generating value for the results.
We produce a continuous flow of information that can and must be monitored and analyzed. Understanding the 5 Vs is just the initial step to understanding the potential impacts of this technology - which is essential for organizations that want to remain competitive in the digital economy.
